Flowers, bubbly, some nibbles and a lovely bunch of people to laugh and learn with. I could nearly leave it at that as that was the evening at the Fresh Flower Company workshop summed up in one sentence. Then again, maybe I should elaborate just a little more and tell you what this evening was all about.
Last week I had been invited to this workshop where it was all about early autumn flowers. More importantly though it was about learning how to put together an autumnal centre piece for a table and a flower crown. We were shown how to use a variety of foliage and flowers, pad it all out with 'bun moss', how to then build height and variety into our creations. It was the kind of creative activity that makes learning so engaging and fun and everybody's centre pieces were individual and beautiful.
After completing these pieces, we were taught how to create a flower crown. With each individual small piece of flower and foliage having to be prepared by wrapping thin wire around it, it's a time intensive (unless of course you're an expert) and somewhat fiddly task. After getting all the small pieces ready, they then need to be added to a bare wreath. Again, it takes a little time for the non-expert, but it turns out there's something really therapeutic about it.
And this was possibly one of the best things about the evening: I arrived in my (lately) usual slightly tired, harassed and stressed state and discovered afterwards that I had spent a few hours not thinking about anything but the flowers and "work" in my hands. For somebody whose mind usually runs at a million miles an hour (and not necessarily always with the best results), this was a bit of a revelation. I was literally 'in the moment' with a completely clear head doing something enjoyable and creative. That really was a wonderful experience and that night I slept better than I had for ages.
The lovely team at the Fresh Flower Company who taught us wearing some of our handiwork. A huge Thank You to them for making this such a warm, fun and creative evening.
