A little while back I went to Nancy in the Lorraine region of France. This is where my grandmother (on my father's side) lives and the family headed there from various parts of France, Germany and - in our case - the UK to celebrate her 100th birthday. As I didn't want to stay in some identikit hotel, I decided to rent a small AirBnB apartment. So, I set about looking at the pictures online, comparing interiors and locations.
I didn't have any fixed ideas as to what it was I was looking for, after all, how big are the chances really that you will find a place that is completely to your taste? Instead I was browsing the site, waiting for something to jump out at me, knowing that "I'd know it when I see it". That is just the way I very often work - I let my gut feeling guide me and I know instinctively when something is just so...
So, when I saw this place, I knew immediately that it was "the one". I sent off my booking request and it was confirmed the same day. The apartment was only a short walk from the famous Place Stanislas and the city centre, so perfect for dumping the car nearby and enjoying the weekend. The main thing, however, was the interior.
Now, I love to travel, I love discovering new places, meeting new people, exploring and looking for small adventures. At the same time, I'm very much a homely person. I can spend days at home, pottering about, working, cooking, reading and feel completely at ease. I love to be surrounded by the little things that are "me" and my home is my safe place from the world. So, when I find a place that makes me feel like this whilst traveling, I know I have the perfect combination. This was such a place. The moment I walked in I felt right at home.
The owner was super friendly and easy going. There was a double bed in the bedroom (ok, double mattress, but that was fine) and a foldout sofa in the living room. The whole place was simple and yes, there were a couple of small problems with the - ahem - toilet, but she was still working on the place and it wasn't the end of the world. Far more important than all the practical considerations was the way this home made me feel. It made me feel at home when we came back from a day of celebrations and when a big thunderstorm was raging outside.
This place was full of charming details and little ideas. Perfect for someone like me who likes nothing more than to take in these kind of things. As soon as I set eyes on the main room, I wanted to get my camera out and capture all those details. Everything looked lovingly arranged and treasured. There didn't seem to be anything that could be considered out of place and yet it didn't look forced. It was perfectly balanced, easy going and had personality. It was perfect for a long weekend and a lovely reminder that taste is not about having lots of money…
If you're looking to stay there, search for "Appt Terrace 8 min Place Stanislas, Nancy" on the AirBnB website and you should recognise the interior from these pictures.
