Warm and sunny days (which already seem a distant memory), time spent by the pool after exploring the area, good food served in the simplest way, slowly moving towards the evening where a celebration is awaiting... There really is no better way to spend a day.
Whilst in Provence, we celebrated my mum's big birthday (no, I'm not telling which one) and it was great to have everybody together in this beautiful location. There's something about being able to spend a lot of time outside and that makes everything feel so easy and unpretentious. Food that wouldn't be considered "a proper meal" in the UK takes on the status of a feast and a lemon sorbet presented with a little candle becomes a happy and fitting replacement for a big and overblown birthday cake - especially considering that my mum doesn't like cake anyway.
Who cares that none of the serving bowls match, the table is a bit wobbly and we couldn't find a table cloth in the rented house. We just added some handpicked flowers and name cards inspired by the arty region to create a party setting and the rest was simply about enjoying the company...
