New York Shopping...

There are places that inspire me and make me want to get creative. These places have something special about them, are packed with interesting things and have something to discover in every corner. These places are, however, not usually shops. Or so I thought. That was until I visited this place, ABC Carpet & Home, whilst I was in New York.

I know, visiting a shop doesn't necessarily sound that exciting and I would probably look at most people with a somewhat blank expression if they spoke to me about a large store in a manner that I usually reserve for flea markets, great cafés, a really cool, small independent shops or fabulous exhibitions. But a store? Go shopping and tell everybody to the last detail what I bought? Erm, no, that's not really me. Until now. I have to admit that this was something of a revelation. Yes, of course it's a shop and of course it's designed to draw you in and make you want to spend a year's rent budget, but I don't think I've ever seen it done so well.

It starts with the wall treatment which is just so amazing! I know it might sound like the strangest thing to admire, but it looks like wallpaper has been striped and a hundred years of various paints have been revealed. The colours and textures are simply gorgeous. Then there's of course the way things are laid out and displayed. Every little detail looks like a small installation or work of art. And who could resist the kitchen department… Well, what can I say, if luggage weight restrictions didn't exist, I would probably have bought half of all the things on offer. From baking tins to whisks, cleaning brushes to wooden crates, I would have carted the lot home.

Looking back at these images now though makes me realise something. It's not about spending money, buying lots of stuff and showing it off (though I did buy a couple of small souvenirs which I shared on Instagram a while back), it's simply about having seen it. Let's face it, I could have bought an awful lot more, but would that have made it any more special? Probably not. For now I'm just happy to share these pictures with you and to give you a small glimpse of a beautiful, big store…
