Mirror image...

Is there anything better than being in a strange city and discovering a gem? When in Amsterdam, I spent Sunday walking around with no particular plan. This is when, in one of the small streets next to a canal, I came across this wonderful workshop of Anouk Beerents. The large doors were open, so I wandered inside to find myself immediately captivated by the atmosphere, the beautiful mirrors, the candle light, and - er - the Fiat500 sitting in the middle of the room.

Anouk specialises in antique (mainly French and Italian) mirrors which are mostly gilded with gold and silver leaf. She restores them in the workshop and also imports and exports them. Walking around that place felt like being in a different world. One where real craftsmanship is appreciated, a workshop looks like something that wouldn't be out of place in World of Interiors, and there's a feeling that a tiny part of history is being preserved for future generations to enjoy. In short, just a beautiful place.
