House Tour: Debi Treloar...

As you know, I don't really 'do' much colour. Unless you count various shades of grey, black, white and a dash of natural woods and some green plants as colourful. So nobody was more surprised than me to discover that, when entering this home on the Livingetc House Tour, I absolutely loved it. I mean, it's full of colour! Accessories and pieces of furniture in the brightest pinks and turquoises, dots of orange and even the odd bit of black. My guess is that the reason it so appealed to me was down to the fact that it wasn't overwhelming because the overall backdrop was white. White walls and floors to offset all those pops of colour, vintage pieces and the most amazing light gave it an overall calm feel. Believe me, I know how strange liking bright colours sounds coming from me...

The other thing I didn't realise when I walked in was who that home belongs to. As so often when you admire a photographer, you know their work, but haven't really paid a huge amount of attention to what the person behind the lens might look like. It doesn't help that I'm really rubbish at remembering whether I've actually met somebody in "real life" or I only know them from various websites, blogs or books. I blame the internet for that one!

Anyway, so, it turns out this home belongs to Debi Treloar, fabulous interiors photographer who has worked on many of my favourite books and with some of my favourite stylists. I found out who she was after chatting to her, finding out that she's a photographer and asking for her card. And then it all went downhill from there. In my excuse, it was a hot day, I had already viewed and photographed four other houses, walked around in the heat and my brain was clearly too weak to catch up with my mouth. To cut it short: I went straight into the most embarrassing 'fan girl' mode imaginable. All "ohmergawwwd I love your work...". My brain was telling me to shut up as - judging by Debi's face, who was charming and very graceful about it - I was clearly acting like some mad woman. However, my mouth was faster and in the end all I could think was "get out as fast as possible, you're making an idiot of yourself". So I did...

Well, at least for a while. I went upstairs to take some more pictures, all along thinking "what were you thinking?! pull yourself together, Carole!". Of course I had to come back downstairs at some point which is when I ran into Debi again (well, it is her house!). I thought that it might be a good idea to apologise for my crazy behaviour. I could of course just have graciously said something on the lines of "apologies if I acted like an overexcited puppy" and left it at that, but instead I apologised only to follow it up with a "but...". You can imagine the rest. Debi seemed positively relieved when somebody else started talking to her and I used that opportunity to make as dignified (i.e. not very) an exit as I could muster and quietly left. If a huge hole had appeared in the middle of the kitchen, I would gladly have jumped into it.

In a way, all this goes back to me generally being a bit shy, but then suddenly going completely over the top at the most inappropriate moments. It's not the first time this kind of thing has happened to me and it's not something I'm particularly proud of. In turn, it tends to result in me shying away from other events because, well, I might yet again make an idiot of myself. Still if that results in some images of an amazing home, then maybe that's a small price to pay. I hope you like them.
